CitiBank's case is the newest in a series of complaints regarding mishandling of private customer data. CitiBank, apparently, uses
UPS to securely transfer Magnetic Tapes cotaining archives of sensitive customer data from one location to another. Such physical transfer of the data can run into serious problems in future as well. One wonders why are not we still able to transfer such data over internet/internet2 supported by high performace transfer protocols such as
Sabul using some secure transport protocol
such as proposed by Allcock et al with added security by employing some sort of
VPN solution? All the advancements in IT research are of no good if we are unable to convince people like those at CitiBank to make use of them.
